About Us
Who we are
The International Folk Dancers of Ottawa, established in the early 1970s, is a non-profit group for the support and preservation of recreational folk dancing in the Ottawa-Hull area. It sponsors events for local folk dancers and the community at large, and stays in touch with other folk dancing groups and their events nationally and internationally.
We no longer have a performance component to our club.
When & Where?
The IFDO meets every Thursday night at the Jack Purcell Community Centre in Ottawa (320 Jack Purcell Lane - off Elgin, just south of Gilmour). In summer, we sometimes dance out doors.
Learning
A beginners'/review class starts 7:15-ish until 8:00 p.m. Dances that are commonly done at IFDO, and are "beginner-friendly" will be taught/reviewed each week.
Teaching of intermediate-advanced dances will start at approximately 8:00 p.m. The last Thursday of each month there is only teaching from 7:30-8:00, and after that dancing by requests- no intermediate/advanced teaching from 8:00-9:00.
Except for costume parties, dress is casual.
Please bring your own water bottle/hydration system.
Dances are usually taught by local teachers, while guest instructors teach at special workshops from time to time throughout the year. No previous experience is necessary.
Fees & Membership
Annual membership is $85 and runs from September; otherwise, the charge is $5 per evening.
Membership includes free entrance to some special Thursday-night workshops and a lower rate for local week-end workshops and other events.
