Songcircle at Maura's Let's sing in the new year, and keep our spirits up as we wait for the lengthening days to be evident rather than theoretical. Here are the details: 184 Ethel Street, upstairs (side door off the driveway) Friday, January 9, 2009 Potluck dinner around 6:30 Singing after dinner, with the usual break for coffee, tea and desserts Directions: From the Queensway, take Vanier Parkway north past Montreal Road. Turn right at the next light, on Deschamps, pass Desrosiers (one way the wrong way) and turn left on Durocher, left on Carillon, right on Baribeau and right again on Ethel. My place is towards the end of the block on the right. If you consult a map it will make more sense. From points east you can take Montreal Road, going right on Hannah, left on Carillon and then as above. Let's post requests and offers of rides to the listserv to alleviate the effects of the bus strike. I look forward to singing with you! Maura PS ? (shameless self-promotion) ? It is still possible to register for Singing Our Heritage: Canadian Folk Songs, the course Ranald and I are offering at the Ottawa Folklore Centre, Tuesdays, 7 to 8 pm for 8 weeks. Please register directly with OFC, but call or write or talk to us, if you have questions. _____________________ Maura Volante www.mauravolante.ca maura at mauravolante.ca 613.277.9208 From maura at mauravolante.ca Thu Jan 8 22:42:56 2009 From: maura at mauravolante.ca (Maura Volante) Date: Thu, 8 Jan 2009 22:42:56 -0500 Subject: [song-circle] ride for Daphne requested Message-ID: <303CD62B-4C00-4F01-9956-91563BB7F440@mauravolante.ca> Hi all, If anyone is coming to Songcircle tomorrow evening and driving anywhere near 1150 Fisher (near Baseline), my daughter, Daphne would like to come join us and would appreciate a ride. Well, grab your pencils and circle Saturday February 7th! I'm excited to confirm that I will be monopolizing the 4th Stage of the National Arts Centre (53 Elgin Street, Ottawa) on that evening, backed up by an incredibly gifted combo consisting of James Stephens (fiddle, guitar, bass), Danny Artuso (acoustic, electric and pedal steel guitars), and Alex Vlamis (piano, accordion). All three will pitch in on vocals as required. Those of you who were fortunate enough to hear this trio at the launch of my CD "Practical Man" a few years back will appreciate how delighted I am to have them on board once again. If you bump into me I?ll probably have tickets to sell ($18.00). Otherwise, you can buy tickets from the NAC Box office or through Ticketmaster online or at 613-755-1111 (an additional charge applies). Net proceeds of this concert will benefit Achillea Endeavours (a registered charity) in its support of Riverglen Biodynamic Farm. Doors will open at 7:30 on Saturday, February 7th; the concert begins at 8:00 p.m. (So it does NOT conflict with a Song Circle night, Hooray!) Hope to see you there! Harps and Voices - A Concert for Bridgid's Eve January 31, 2009 St. Luke's Anglican Church, 760 Somerset Street, Ottawa Concert is at 8pm This is a concert of mostly celtic music, featuring myself as a voice soloist, Mary Muckle, Kelly Aminian and Julie Leduc on harp, and the Ottawa Celtic Choir and the Cantorion Cerdd Dant as guests. For those who don't know, Cantorion Cerdd Dant is a welsh-language choir who sings a particular genre of Welsh folksong called a "penillion". The Ottawa Celtic Choir sings a mix of English and Celtic language folksongs. It looks to be a great night of harp and voice, so come and help us fight off the cold and dark with a night of light and song! Tickets are $15 for adults, $10 for seniors and students. People can pick them up either from the Folklore Centre, or by calling me at 613-552-3964. I shall say briefly that normally we are well served by buses from Billings Bridge either 140 which stops at the corner of Nicholson and Springland or 87 which stops on Riverside Drive at Ridgewood. It is likely that people will have to come by car though one person came last year on his bike. Very impressive. By car - take Bronson South to the Brookfield exit. Drive across Brookfield onto Flannery Drive and follow it south to Nicholson Ave. Turn right and continue to 808 which is on the left side, third house from the end of the block. Or take Riverside Drive south to Ridgewood (St Elias Orthodox Church). Turn left onto Ridgewood and drive to the end of it (one block) to Springland. Turn right on Springland and the second street on the left is Brookfield. We are the third house from the corner on the right. There is parking on the street. WE look forward to seeing as many of you can come.
