Given the political climate of the likely Canadian federal election and the presidential race in the U.S., I invite you to bring anything you might know on political (or politically incorrect) topics. It's also the autumnal equinox - not sure if there are any songs on that subject specifically, but certainly harvest time, the coming of fall, etc. For more information about the session including directions to the Ironworks Pub, see the Almonte Trad Sing listinfo pages and click the link to the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ ). The Ottawa Celtic Choir is having its first rehearsal tonight at St. John the Evangelist Church, on the corner of Elgin and Somerset. Rehearsal is from 7pm to 9pm. The choir sings songs of the Celtic nations and Celtic diaspora, in English and in various Celtic languages. An ability to read music or speak a Celtic language is not necessary to join the choir. There is a membership fee, but that goes towards space rental, insurance, music, and a stipend to an accompanist. Speaking of which, I'm also looking for an accompanist to play piano for the choir. If anyone is interested, or knows someone who might be interested, would you please pass the message on and ask them to get in touch with me? Thanks! There is a new Songcircle in town, for those who want to focus on songs of labour and social justice (but not completely! Other songs are welcome as well.) The Capital City Workers' Choir has not grown to a size appropriate for a choir, but many have come and gone and told us they didn't have time to commit regularly but would love to be in it if they could come occasionally. So we are turning it into a songcircle! You are all welcome, of course. If you have any questions, please contact me. Thanks, Maura CCWC Labour & Social Justice Songcircle First & Third Thursdays of each month starting September 18, 7 ? 9 pm Centretown DayCare Centre, 94 James Street between Kent and Lyon Open to all ages and levels of commitment Here is a new recreational singing opportunity for folks who want to sing songs of labour, social justice and related movements. Using the Songcircle format, Maura Volante will facilitate singing sessions twice a month, bringing her strong singing voice, teaching skills, memory for songs and a variety of printed resources. The Songcircle format is a widely used singalong structure focused on fun for everyone. It is simple. People sit in a circle and pass the turn around. When it is your turn you have various options: sing or lead a song; request a song for someone else to lead; make a vague request on a topic; or pass. It?s great if you think of something during the week and come prepared to sing it, but if you have no songs in mind, there will be lyric sheets and songbooks available to help find good ones. You are also welcome to bring songbooks and songsheets you have collected. Bring instruments if you want to play. If you are one of those people who was thinking about joining CCWC but could not commit to a weekly rehearsal, this will allow you to participate on your own schedule. You are welcome every time or whenever you can fit it into your life. Songcircles work well with all ages and levels of musical ability because our voices are so much stronger in groups, so bring your kids and your grandparents, your co-workers and your next door neighbours. Keep up your spirits, on the road to social change, by singing together! There will be a small fee to pay for Maura?s facilitation, with seasonal and drop-in options. _____________________ Maura Volante www.mauravolante.ca maura at mauravolante.ca 613.277.9208 From songadmin at canoemail.com Thu Sep 18 20:27:28 2008 From: songadmin at canoemail.com (songadmin at canoemail.com) Date: Thu, 18 Sep 2008 20:27:28 -0400 Subject: [song-circle] Sep 19 canceled Message-ID: <8104C88FD15409B498346F1568631040@songadmin.canoemail.com> Hi Everybody As no one has taken on this Friday's Circle, I have to consider it canceled. I have moved! I am now at 184 Ethel Street, in a place of my own: the second floor of a lovely little house in Vanier. I can't wait to bring a few folks into the place and do some of my favourite things: eat, drink and play music. I even have a balcony for smokers and those who love fresh air. So I am having a housewarming, with songcircle people and lots of others as well. We will start with a potluck dinner around 6:30, and carry on from there, but not, necessarily in a songcircle format. There may not be enough room for a constant circle. I expect it to be more fluid and changing, but there will be singing. Please bring food if you are eating, drink if you are drinking, instruments if you play them and your own sweet singing voice. I have a piano here. I also have tea and coffee. Also feel free to bring friends and family. Friday, October 10 184 Ethel Street, top floor (side entrance) 6:30 - whenever It will be very useful to know who is coming, so please let me know if you can, by email or phone (info in signature). The house is near Hannah, about three blocks north of Montreal Road, but you should know that Ethel Street is one way going east, so if you plan to park near the house, you need to get onto Ethel from Baribeau. There are several ways to get here by bus, but the most frequent bus is the #2, along Montreal Road. Get off at Hannah and walk north to Ethel, turn left. I hope to see you on October 10! The following from her: Welcome to an old farm site for Oct. 3, this Friday, to celebrate the arrival of fall with song and a walk in the fragrant woods for those who come early. Pot luck at 6 or whenever you get here, singing at 7:30. Address, 1913 Dunrobin Road. Approximately one mile from the March junction, past the gas bar on your right, past the street light on the left at Harwood lane, and left turn into 1913 , a long narrow lane. Pass the first entrance to the turn circle on the left and turn into the circle. Angle parking along the right, or line up at the end ready to exit the circle. More parking on the right side of the lane but best to back into the grassy lane leading to the old barn. Better to leave your car turned, ready to exit, rather complicated to do so after dark. ( Access to March Road from Carling Avenue, Right on March and right at the lights marking the junction with Dunrobin.) Comment, those allergic to cats and dogs and dust and spiders take heed, old log houses are like that. Pot luck 6:00 pm, singing 7:30.
