Lyrics - Fern Martin, Pakenham, Ontario Stephen Harper says his leadership's the best Makes decisions without talkin' to the rest If a bully gets your favour Then our Stevie is your Saviour Consultation? No, it doesn't pass the test National Childcare was the first one out the door, Then Kelowna and Kyoto, many more There's some promises he's stuck with And the others that he mucked with Like elections in three years instead of four. Thinks that climate change is for another day Don't do anything 'til all join in the fray. It's about Oil Sands production For American consumption. In the meantime, Mother Nature has her say. Women's issues, artist freedom are sidelined Could abortion rights be very far behind? We will all have cause to worry If majority is Tory When you cast your vote, please keep these things in mind. Elections seem to bring out the negative nasty side of some people. Concerned about the cuts in funding to the arts, I was singing with my group this week at the Cube Gallery, performing the music of Fats Waller, at the "Un-Conservative, Un-Funded Arts Gala, and was very disturbed to see the extremely poor taste that was exhibited by one person who submitted a You Tube video using footage of a film of Hitler in WWII, with a voice overdub of Stephen Harper speaking to his caucus. How could anyone compare these two situations? It doesn't matter what political party you support, it was unbelievably bad taste to post this. The owner of the Gallery was embarrassed and apologised when I told him how I felt, especially as I had arranged for a recently arrived pianist from Hamburg, Germany, to sit in and play with us. I was embarrassed and hastily assured him that most Canadians are decent in nature. It was irresponsible and reprehensible. If you're going to post items of a political nature on the Song Circle list, then please take my name off the list. For me it's not about political partisanship; please send equally good material poking fun at the Greens or Marxist-Leninists and I'll be as happy to see it. It is about civic engagement and using our art in ways that are relevant to the wider communities. These particular lyrics seemed in exceptionally good taste. That was my favourite list posting of the last many months! If people want to turn this email distribution list into a forum for political debate during an election campaign I'd be happy to post factual information in rhyming couplets revealing the true motives of those lying, thieving, corrupt Liberals, not just the fanciful imaginings of ignorant socialists who understand zip about economics or politics. Again, I suggest the Almonte group create it's own mailing list and stop using this one which was created for the Old Sod Folk Society song circle. I've read the Amonte mailings advertising their meetings and listing all the songs they sing. None of it has been political. The songs have not been political. They have all been traditional. It was uncharacteristic of them to use the mailing list for political purposes during and election campaign, and, in my opignion, highly inappropriate. Political opinions are strongly held. I keep mine to myself to avoid annoying other people who enjoy getting together to sing folk songs, no matter what their politics. I'd appreciate it if others could show the same restrain. If not, watch out! I have the political and economic background to blow any of you out of the water. A declaration of war would be suicidal. She has shaped a cycle of song and story based on bicycle history, political spin, and cycles of time . . . using a bike for percussion and her own creative flair. I saw the workshop/premier in Toronto last month and all the signs were that this show is marvelous and unique. However, unfortunately I can't come to it because of a work conflict, but do go! And check out Paddy Tutty at 1:30 as well --she's a dulcimer playing balladeer, from SK I believe, and very fine. The rest of the line up looks to be high quality --so just do it all! Check out http://www.ottawastorytellers.ca/festival.php and click on the 2008 program link, or try http://www.rasputins.ca/OS-festival2008.htm hope you all go and enjoy!
