Subject: [song-circle] Chance to hear great music and stories this week
Message-ID:
Dear Song Circle,
This is one of those "thought you might like to know about this" notes.
Paddy Tutty, a wonderful singer of traditional ballads, is coming from Saskatchewan to perform at the Ottawa StoryTelling Festival on Saturday, Nov 8. (That's this coming Saturday) at 1:30 in the Library and Archives Canada, 395 Wellington.
Also that afternoon, Caroline Parry's daughter Evalyn is presenting "a musical, spoken-word cycle" accompanied by a percussionist playing a bicycle(!) at 4:00 Saturday.
Kelly Russell, fiddler and teller of the famous "Pigeon Inlet" stories, is coming from Newfoundland for the Saturday evening concert, 7:30. (Also in that show, Adwoa Badoe, Ghanaian teller, singer, dancer, and Klyde Broox, Jamaican dub poet.)
In addition to great music at the Festival, there will be fantastic stories from Canada's past this Wednesday at the NAC's 4th Stage; a workshop with celebrated author Denise Chong on how you can make stories from your life, your family's experiences, or the national news (Saturday morning 10:00 a.m.), and a range of stories that will make you laugh and cry.
On Sunday, the programming is divided up by age groups: 4-6, 7-10, 11+. Families with children aged 14 and under and teachers are admitted free that day. There will be stories, activities, a magician, and a clown to entertain all ages. (This is a great afternoon for grandparents, Jackie, if your granddaughter is old enough.)
Why not welcome the Celtic season of Samhain, the season for stories, with a feast of songs and stories. Full details at www.ottawastorytellers.ca
Cheers!

Hi Everybody
Song Circle this Friday, November 7 at the home of Dale and Susan
Morland, 245 Irving Place, Ottawa, phone 613-725-9208.
If you know where the old observatory is at the Experimental Farm,
Maple Drive, which passes right by the observatory building on the
farm, continues north of Carling as Irving Place. Our house is about a
half block north of the observatory.
For those who don't know that vital reference point, Irving Place is
east of the Civic Hospital and west of Preston, just north off
Carling, right where Carling starts going down the hill towards
Preston and Dows Lake, or just at the top of the hill if you are
heading west on Carling past Preston.
If you want to see a map, go to:
http://www.mapquest.com/maps/map.adp?address=245+Irving+Place&city=Ottaw
a&state=ON&country=CA&zoom=8
A nice, full colour map will come up. (Thanks to Rob Burnfield.)
Prepare a couple of songs and share them with us.
As usual, pot luck at 6:30, singing about 7:30, or so, folk time.

***Reminder***
Trad Sing in Almonte, Sunday, November 16, 2 p.m.
at the Ironworks Pub.
Please remember that it helps the session to flow
more smoothly if you have prepared your songs
(i.e. know it more or less by heart).
To encourage this, the first two rounds will be
reserved for those who have something prepared.
On subsequent rounds, if we are running out of
prepared material, we may resort to "the book" for
inspiration.
It is also helpful if you provide a few printouts
of the words of the chorus for those who would
like to sing along. Please review the
FAQ for more info about the guidelines for the
session.

Hello Songcirclers,
I have been hesitant to sign up to host because my new home in Vanier
is quite a bit smaller than my old place in the Glebe. But I really
miss hosting, so I am going to give it a try. It might be a bit
squishy, but you are all welcome.
We may need some extra seating, so small folding chairs and/or
cushions for floor sitting would be appreciated.
Here are the details:
184 Ethel Street, upstairs (side door off the driveway)
Friday, November 21
Potluck dinner around 6:30
Singing after dinner, with the usual break for coffee, tea and desserts
Directions:
From the Queensway, take Vanier Parkway north past Montreal Road.
Turn right at the next light, on Deschamps, pass Desrosiers (one way
the wrong way) and turn left on Durocher, left on Carillon, right on
Baribeau and right again on Ethel. My place is towards the end of the
block on the right. If you consult a map it will make more sense.
From points east you can take Montreal Road, going right on Hannah,
left on Carillon and then as above.
On transit, you can take the #2 and get out at the stop after the
Vanier Parkway, walking up Hannah to Ethel and turning left. Or take
the #3, get out at Deschamps and turn left at Desrosiers, right on
Carillon, left on Baribeau and right on Ethel.
A small note about the process:
Many of you have heard me talk about reading and memorizing, and this
is not a directive but a suggestion: when someone else is leading a
song, leave your reading glasses in your purse or pocket and have a
go at learning orally. If you are leading, do what works for you, but
if you go through some songs ahead of time you will be more
comfortable even if you are still reading the lyrics. You may find it
more satisfying to look at each other and listen to each other
without reading, and you may find you can remember more than you
thought you could.
I look forward to singing with you!
Maura
PS ? (shameless self-promotion) ? If you know anyone who wants some
singing at their Christmas party at home, work or any kind of club,
and doesn't feel comfortable leading it, I am available for hire.

Hello fellow song-circlers,
My choir, the Welsh Choral Society, is joining forces this Christmas with the Phoenix Players and performing in two plays. These plays are "Joe Carpenter and Son", the nativity story set in a 1900's English village and "A Child's Christmas in Wales" the famous Dylan Thomas piece adapted for the stage. The choir provides music throughout both performances. The plays are being staged at Centrepointe on December 4th, 5th and 6th at 7:30 p.m. and afternoon performances on December 6th and 7th at 2:00 p.m.
Tickets can be purchased on line through brown paper tickets. The links are below.

Winter Lights Concert
Healy & Juravich with James Stephens
Saturday November 22, 7 pm
Church of the Ascension, (253 Echo Drive, Ottawa).
Inspired by the rich traditions of Irish and North American folk music,
Healy & Juravich sing about the struggles, hopes and triumphs of
communities under fire. Healy's crystal clear, Irish-influenced alto
combines with Juravich's rich, resonant baritone, to weave a colourful
tapestry of stunning harmonies. Together with James Stephens' brilliant
interpretations on fiddle, mandolin, and bass, a concert with Healy &
Juravich offers music that is, as one reviewer said:
"acoustic and relaxing, yet laced with thoughtful lyrics, based on
mature relationships and grappling to understand a world filled with
hate and warfare."
Tickets will be sold at the door, on a "Pay what you can" basis. Amounts
over $10 per person will qualify for a tax receipt. (Payment by cash or
cheque only please.) In order to speed up the issuing of receipts,
please if possible pay by cheque that has noted the name and address to
which the receipt should be sent, or come with cash in an envelope with
the name and address for the receipt marked clearly on the outside.
Cheques should be made payable to "The Church of Ascension". Tom
Juravich and Teresa Healy are both residents of Old Ottawa East and are
generously volunteering to perform at this concert which is a fundraiser
for the Brantwood Park Field House renovation.

Turn right at the next light, on Deschamps, pass Desrosiers (one way
the wrong way) and turn left on Durocher, left on Carillon, right on
Baribeau and right again on Ethel. My place is towards the end of the
block on the right. If you consult a map it will make more sense.
