Greetings Dancers,

Where can you spend a winter’s night away from the TV connecting with
your neighbors, having fun, hearing live music, getting great exercise
and keeping warm? Sound too good to be true? All this and more is
waiting at the Crary Mills Contra Dance.

The 2009 Contra Dance Series at the beautiful old Crary Mills Grange
Hall just south of Canton, New York will start on Friday, February 20
featuring the lively High Flats String Band and the calling of Sarah
Van Nostrand from Syracuse. The dance will go from 7:30 to 10:30, with
instruction for beginners from 7 to 7:30. All ages are welcome, and no
partner is necessary. Cost is $7 for adults and children are free.
Please wear soft soled shoes and bring water. For more information or
directions, call 315-386-2609.

Crary Mills has become the epicenter of the North Country contra dance
universe with dancers coming from all over, including Canada. The
popular dances have been praised for having a real sense of joy and
community with people from 8 to 80 participating. Crary Mills was once
the largest Grange Hall in St. Lawrence County, and is a classic
setting for the folk dances. “It even has a sprung maple floor made for
dancing,” says organizer Patricia Greene. “Years ago there were dances
in the hall nearly every week. We’re happy to be reviving an old
tradition.”

High Flats String Band is a local band that plays lively music in a
Southern Appalachian style. Rhythm and fun are the key elements. Jody
Wallace plays banjo, fiddle, ukele, and occasionally sings our dances.
Phen Canner plays fiddle and teams up on vocals, Geoff Hayton plays
guitar, and Claude Aldous plays double base like no one we’ve ever
seen, literally dancing on stage.

We will have a special treat at this dance when Gretchen Koehler and
The More The Merrier Impromptu Contra Band take the stage for two
numbers at the end of the first set.

Join us for a delightful winter’s night of dancing. We look forward to
seeing familiar smiling faces and welcome you all back!

Patricia
